Artist Biographies:

Brad Aldridge: creates pastoral landscapes which evoke an Arcadian calm. His paintings conjure 19th century Romanticism and Tonalism while employing somewhat loose 20th century brushstrokes. Aldridge states that his ultimate goal is to create objects of beauty which nourish the viewer on a spiritual level. Born in 1965 near Tokyo Japan, Aldridge lived in several locations throughout the United States as his father served in the US Army. Aldridge knew he wanted to become a professional artist from the age of four when his mother began taking an art class at a community college. Aldridge graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Brigham Young University, Utah, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arkansas.  Having exhibited in over 20 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions, Aldridge has recently created paintings and monumental landscape murals for temples on five continents for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Brigham Young University, with an emphasis in lithography, and he went to the University of Arkansas for graduate school. Collectors include the Pinnfund Corporation, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, University of Oklahoma, and the Springvale Museum of Art. He lives and works in Moroni, Utah.

Carl Bretzke: is a representational oil painter who specializes in urban scenes and plein air landscapes. His compelling nocturne, street, and scenic landscapes originate from his surrounding midwestern landscape where his paintings are often executed on location. The scenes themselves, although somewhat serene, are energized by Carl's use of color and strong focal points. Reflective surfaces and dark lighting resonate a sense of mystery, while the inclusion of cars, familiar edifices, and strong use of light and shadow create a sense of universality.

Carl holds an MD degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School and is a practicing radiologist. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Colorado, where he also received a minor in Fine Art. Carl trained under notable landscape painter Joseph Paquet, and holds the distinction in 2014 alone of winning First Place in the Plein Air Salon May/April competition, First Place in the Aspen Plein Air Salon competition, and First Place Plein Air Salon April/May Edition. In 2016, one of his plein air winter paintings (Winter Sunset Near Farmers Market - exhibited and sold here in the gallery) won the Grand Prize in the 2016 Plein Air Salon. Bretzke lives and works in Minneapolis, MN.

Jacqueline Chanda: was born in Detroit, Michigan in the 1950s.  Having no other visual artists in the family, Chanda had to develop her own sense of what it meant to be a visual artist. She remembers studying about famous artists, such as Thomas Gainsborough and Pablo Picasso in the fourth grade.  This knowledge helped fuel her interest in painting. She even went as far as replicating Blue Boy, a painting by Thomas Gainsborough.

Fast-forward with her through marriage, a daughter, years of teaching and doing research in art education pedagogical practices at several universities, we find her doing what she always loved and wanted to do, paint full time. Since focusing full time on her painting practice, Chanda has participated in several residencies, and made, exhibited and sold her artwork.  Her work has been accepted to numerous juried local and national shows and she has won several awards: 1st  and 3rd place in two different national exhibitions, 2nd place in a local show, a crystal merit award in an international exhibition, and two honorable mentions.  She and her work have been featured in the Arizona Daily Star newspaper, the Sonoran Arts Network, art review, Lovin’ Life After 50 magazine, the Tubac Gallery guide, the Tucson/Marana Daily News.  In addition, she has appeared on PBS Television “Spot on the Arts” and KGUN 9 T.V.

Ed Cooper: began drawing and painting at an early age—and it became his lifetime passion. As a youth, he lived on a farm, worked in the fields, hiked in the woods, wandered the hills, and developed a great love for nature and landscape. During this time, he collected and studied illustrations in outdoor and sporting magazines. He was also greatly influenced by plein air painters of Cape Anne such as Emile Gruppe, by Pennsylvania impressionists like Edward Redfield, and by the artistry of John Carlson.

After high school, he attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Illustration. He worked for many years as a graphic artist and illustrator before devoting himself full time to landscape painting. During his career, he used a progression of media, from oil to watercolor to pastel to acrylics, but finally settled again on his first love, oil paint. He has won first prize in the landscape category in a national contest sponsored by American Artist Magazine and won the Landscape Art Award at the highly competitive Arts for the Parks competition. Ed is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters and has also been an award winner in a number of plein air painting competitions, including Paint Annapolis and Plein Air Easton.

Carlton Fletcher: received his degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design (BFA, 1972), and American University (MFA, 1982) where he studied under Robert D’Arista, and was one of the founding members of the Washington Studio School (1985). Since 1977 he has had solo shows at Wolfe Street Gallery, Georgetown Art Gallery, Hull Gallery, the Washington Studio School, and Jane Haslem Gallery. Group shows include: Washington Art from the 1940s through the 1980s, American University (2014); National Juried Exhibition, Gallery 84, New York (1996); 169th Annual Exhibition, National Academy of Design, New York (1994); New American Figure Painting, Contemporary Realist Gallery, San Francisco, and Clemson University (1992); Lennart Anderson Selects, First Street Gallery, New York (1990); The Human Figure in New Painting & Sculpture, New York Academy of Art (1990); and Prints: Washington, Phillips Collection, Washington (1988). His work was featured in the 2018 Katzen Center exhibition on Robert D’Arista, his professor during his time at American University.Carlton's paintings are in the permanent collections of American University, Georgetown University, Stanford University, and the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities.

Rodgers Naylor: is a native Washingtonian, born near Georgetown and spent his childhood on a farm near the Pautuxent River in Maryland. He pursued painting and drawing at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, The Atelier in Minneapolis, and the Art Students’ League of Denver after attending the University of Chicago and Carleton College for academics.

Rodgers paints both in the studio and en plein air and continues to draw and paint the figure from life. Although many works are done in the studio, it is the foundation of plein-air and life work which makes the studio painting possible. The simple but elusive concepts of light and depth are woven throughout Rodgers’ oil paintings and are always foremost in his mind as he paints. His work reflects his love of exploring the world’s natural and cultural wonders, which may be near or far and seen at any season, at any time of day, and in any weather. His inspirations are often found in the everyday settings that we all tend to hurry past. After living on the east coast and in the Midwest for many years, Rodgers moved in early 2001 to Colorado where he now lives with his wife and their two cats. He is an avid traveler and hiker, and loves to cook and play the piano.

Antonia Walker: has become known for her paintings of the light and color of the Virginia countryside as well as images of Italy and France. Antonia received a BFA from the University of Georgia, where she studied painting and printmaking and later attended graduate school at George Washington University, when she studied with William Woodward in Brittany. Earlier, while living in South America, she studied drawing and anatomy with Spanish sculptor, Benjamin Saul, at the Academia de Esculptura.

Antonia has had two residencies at the American Academy in Rome. During both trips, she traveled around Italy visiting Venice, Lake Como, Tuscany and Umbria to draw and paint, and to study the art and architecture. For several years she has gone to Provence to paint the fields and perched villages of the countryside. She has been published in many books and her works are represented in the Arts in Embassies program at the State Department, as well as many corporate and private collections throughout the United States. These include NASA, Xerox Corporation, Waterford Foundation, Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area, National Gallery of Art and The Washington Post. Antonia travels to France and Italy frequently, teaching and painting the landscape. She currently resides and paints in Virginia.

Steven Walker: grew up in Richmond, Virginia where he discovered his love for art at a very early age. With little interest in anything else, Steven took the next big step towards his pursuit of a career in art when he earned his bachelor’s degree in fine arts at Virginia Commonwealth University. He later earned his Master’s in Fine Arts at Marywood University. Currently, he lives in Valdosta, GA where he is a full-time artist.

Steven’s landscapes have been well received by collectors and his paintings are part of several private collections including Hilton Hotels, the Boy Scouts of America, Dominion Resources, Virginia State Department, the National Parks Service, and the United States Air Force. He has been included in local and national juried competitions, including the Richeson 75 Landscape Competition, Plein Air Salon, the International Salon Competition, the Oil Painters of America Salon, the Art Renewal Center, Southwest Art Magazine Artistic Excellence Competition Finalist, as well as a traveling exhibition with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. In 2016, Steven won first place and Artists’ Choice at Art at the Arnold in Columbus, OH. He has participated in artist-in-residency programs in Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, and Colorado and was selected to create the Ohio Governor’s Art Awards by the Ohio Arts Council.
