Admitted to Ecole des Beaux Arts of Lyon in 1878, Bouvet enrolled in the master classes of Eugène Carrière (1849-1906) in 1891. The same year he became a member of the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux Arts de Paris and exhibited yearly at the prestigious Salon, winning a Bronze medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition for his painting “Le Soir”, which was purchased by the French state and now hangs in the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris.
Away from the hurry of the Parisian art world, Bouvet’s private love was to retire to the heights of the Normandy cliffs and there, awash in light and sea air, capture the resplendent daybreaks and sunsets that so enchanted the Impressionists. Behind his easel, Bouvet would meditatively render the lightness, purity, luminosity and beauty of the changing hues of light and their reflections glinting in the sea.
