Between the Lines is the first gallery-based exhibition at Calloway Fine Art & Consulting since the spring, a dynamic show featuring the metal sculptures of Jeff Chyatte in conversation with the colorful paintings of Matthew Langley.
Between the Lines is an installation-based exhibition at Calloway Fine Art & Consulting in Georgetown, DC. The dynamic show featuring the metal sculptures of Jeff Chyatte with the colorful paintings of Matthew Langley will have a two-day opening. Each artist will have a ticketed entry opening: Jeff on September 25th, Matthew on September 26th, from 10:30am-5pm.
There are 8 time slots for each artist where up to 4 people will be able to view the exhibition and talk to the artist.
Time slots are 40 minutes and masks are required!
Artist Statements
Jeff Chyatte: My sculpture is about balance, imbalance, and exploration. My work attempts to understand the human condition through discovery of the relationships between its basic components. Linear elements create negative spaces and the interplay of shadow and architecture reveal the cipher within. I gain inspiration from Da Vinci, Euclid and the great scientists who blurred the distinction between art, math and science. Incorporating mathematically significant dimensions, such as the Fibonacci sequence and the Golden Ratio, ensures a subtle equilibrium found in nature. Metallurgy and physics guide my material and design choices as I seek to communicate messages about strength, sustainability, and risk.
Matthew Langley: The exploration of color has over time become a primary focus of my work. This approach to color is instinctual, leaning heavily on my acquired knowledge as opposed to strict adherence to color theory. The work is not pre-planned; almost all of it is improvisation. This improvisation is handled the way that a musician might work; that is, the experimentation is handled inside of the structure of the overall work, playing off initial ideas and extrapolating new ideas that emerge during the work. This illustrates my decision-making process in making new artworks. The resulting body of work consists of multiple markers that observe, comment on, and reflect the decisions I’ve made in the studio.
Biographies
Jeff Chyatte is a Washington, DC native who began his artistic journey 35 years ago. He has combined his experience in cast and welded metals with graduate study of Anatomy and Physiology to build works that express new perspectives on structure and function. Exploring themes of balance, imbalance, and symmetry, he strives to understand human culture through discovery of the relationships between its basic components. Chyatte gains inspiration from Da Vinci, Euclid and the great scientists who blurred the distinction between art, math and science.
Chyatte writes, "Each work expresses ideas and emotions in a foreign language, leaving room for viewer interpretation. Through sculpture, these thoughts obtain a permanency." Chyatte has designed and fabricated a variety of works for private collectors, galleries, museums, commercial buildings and municipalities. In addition, his creations have been shown at Smithsonian affiliate Ann Marie Sculpture Park, National Airport, the Art Museum of the Americas on the National Mall, and the Watergate Hotel. Amazon.com Corporation acquired two works for their headquarters. Most recently, a large sculpture was installed at the entrance of Strathmore Metro Station in Bethesda, Md.
Matthew Langley received his BFA from Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC in 1985. Since then, Langley’s work has been shown extensively in the United States and Europe through numerous group and solo exhibitions. Langley’s artworks have also been included in various public and corporate collections including; the International Museum of Collage, Assemblage, and Construction, DC Commission for the Arts and Humanities, Saks Fifth Avenue, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Forbes and the State Department of the United States. He currently lives and works in New York.
